Osteoporosis Support Group
Portland, Oregon

Upcoming Meetings

The Group provides support, education, and encouragement to persons who are affected by osteoporosis so that life can be enjoyed despite the limitations that can be associated with this disorder.

The Support Group strives to:

Help members realize they are not alone

Provide information and education

Support members in their efforts to lead productive lives

Provide an outlet for feelings

Provide emotional support and coping strategies

The Support Group supplements medical treatment of osteoporosis by educating members on how to assume greater responsibility for their own health. The Group adds a personal dimension to health care by addressing the needs of body, mind and spirit.

The Support Group benefits from a close association with the Oregon Osteoporosis Center, located at the Portland Providence Professional Plaza. The Center is directed by Dr. Michael McClung, an endocrinologist internationally known as a leader in the field of research, diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis. Betsy McClung, Osteoporosis Nurse Specialist and Associate Director of the Center, serves as staff consultant to the Support Group.

Meetings have an educational format, with time for members to ask questions and share feelings, concerns, and coping strategies.

Invited speakers present topics of interest selected by the Group members. These topics include:

Nutrition

Medical treatment for osteoporosis

Physical therapy

Massage

Exercise

At select meetings, Dr. McClung presents current findings from osteoporosis research, as well as news from a variety of national and international meetings.
